The sound of the plasma door powering down, a cycle of three seconds, woke Kevin from a near doze. His vision was red and hazy, full of visions of watching his lab destroyed. Flashes of electricity shattered in front of his eyes.

“Come along.” Phrased as a request meant as a command. The man standing outside of the cell wore black, matte black. The kind of black that hid dried blood stains well. Kevin started to his feet, and swayed before reaching for the wall. He missed his handhold and crashed into the metal, shoulder first. With a grunt, he tried again. This time, hands were there to steady him.

“He’s probably taken a headshot. Birdy did say he fought a Cyclops.” The other guard simply nodded in assent and between the two of them, they managed to half walk drag Kevin from his cell. With an aching neck he turned to look back. Odd how he suddenly wanted to be back inside. It was probably so much safer than being out here.

The elevator played the same attempt at music as the cell, though in a much softer tone. Less homicide inducing and more slow, creeping madness. If he could have put his hands over his ears, he would have, but they were occupied holding onto the vests of the men supporting him.

The ride was thankfully short.

Part of the way up, an ocular sensor appeared in the wall. One of the guards used it to get the elevator moving again. When they reached the correct floor, something sounded outside the elevator, a large lock tumbling into the correct order. Then the elevator doors swept open and the perfumed air rushed in, the smell so thick it coated the throat. All three men gagged.

“Glad we don’t have to stay up here long.” He was gasping for air just to speak. Kevin felt darkness creeping along the edge of his vision threatening to swallow him again as his knees buckled. “No, you don’t.”

A hand connected with Kevin’s nose sending a fresh shock of agony through his head. He bellowed.

“You’ve got to stay awake. The Boss wants to talk to you.” The tinge of amusement at Kevin’s cry of pain wasn’t completely lost on the injured man, though he said nothing. Instead, he forced himself to think about setting one foot in front of the other across this lobby to the door at the far end. It was an imposing door, all black and carved. There were faces staring out of it, though one had to work hard to tell if they were grinning maniacally or grimacing in pain. Kevin wasn’t sure he wanted to know which. It opened to allow all three to enter.

The carpet was a distinct change from the lobby with its metal floor. Here the carpet was plush in shades of blue and faint tinges of green, like moving water. It swallowed the sounds of their footsteps and even the movement of the door as it swung shut on them. The two men stepped away from Kevin, letting him fall to the floor and curl up on the carpet.
